C3 Corvette - 1968 to 1977 - Part 1
After the success in the sales arena as well as the motoring press, the new for 1968 Corvette had a look that made everyone take notice. The car borrowed obvious styling cues for the 1965 Mako Shark II show car. From its peaked fenders, "coke bottle" inspired shape and the interior styling, Corvette was nothing like any other car on the road. The bodystyle would enjoy great longevity in spite of being in production well beyond it's prime. From 1968 till 1977, the overall shape had changed very little, and from the outside, the body between to bumpers was virtually the same from one year to the next. During this era, we saw the most powerfull Corvettes ever, yet we saw some of the most dismal as well. No doubt about it, Corvette had made a reputation that was with the help of Federal regulations, was becoming harder and harder to live up to.Dave McLelan replaced Zora during the era, and Chevrolet was working hard to bring Corvette back to the top. Corvette was still a Corvette, and the Mako Shark II looks would keep buyers waiting in lines to buy them, even when the performance couldn't. |
